Marlborough Riding for the Disabled (MRDA) says a recent donation from the Churchill Private Hospital Trust for its specialised children’s programme “means the world to us”.
MRDA manager Helena Hickey says the funding will go towards operating the Early Intervention Programme.
Held weekly, it is designed to assist toddlers – and sometimes babies and older children – who are delayed in their development to use fine and gross motor skills needed for sitting, turning over, crawling and walking.
“The horses’ movements helps fire up those muscles,” Helena says.
About 12 children currently take part in the programme. “It’s just such a cool morning with those kids,” she says.
The funds will be put towards coaching and equipment such as balls, hoops and poles. It will also keep the horses tacked up, fed and in suitable condition to be ridden by the children.
MRDA receives no government funding and Helena says Churchill’s donation is “huge” for them.
“I just want to say a huge thanks to the Churchill Private Hospital Trust. The donation helps keep us running and it means the world to us.”
Churchill’s General Manager Nicki Stretch says MRDA is an important service that brings many health benefits, and enjoyment, to the Marlborough community.
“This donation will help MRDA continue its great work for all those who use it. The Churchill Private Hospital Trust is very pleased to be able to support such a worthwhile cause.”
